SY Light: A beam of light to warm hearts

  2021-11-05

The incidence of congenital heart defects (CHD) is about 0.4%~1% of live births, which means that there are 150,000 to 200,000 new CHD patients in China every year. At the same time, many poor families are unable to afford the high surgical costs to treat the illness and some even fall into or return to poverty due to the illness.

Xiaoli (all names in the article are pseudonyms) has been diagnosed with CHD by a local hospital since she was born, but the high cost of treatment has caused considerable financial pressure on the poor rural families like Xiaoli’s. In order to treat their daughter, Xiaoli's parents have been running around seeking help from relatives and friends to raise enough money for the surgery. However, the amount of money raised was still a drop in the bucket towards the astronomical cost of the surgery. Meanwhile, with the years of medication Xiaoli has been taking, the high cost of healthcare adds another huge burden to Xiaoli's parents. The family which was already impoverished, had to delay the surgery again and again, leaving the parents desperate with no way out.

Why did we mention all this? It all started with a story full of love.

In order to provide effective treatment to more children from poor families with CHDs, Sheng Ye Capital Limited (“SY Capital” or the “Company”, stock code: 6069.HK) joined forces with Handpicked Love Foundation “Angel Beats” program, to offer kids under 18 years old free CHD screening in designated locations, and to provide financial help for those who are eligible for surgeries but are unable to afford the fees. Xiaoli is one of such kids.

On a sunny weekday afternoon, SY Capital sent a team to welcome the kids that came to Shenzhen for treatment, and met Xiaoli for the first time. Her big smile gripped the heart of every member on the team, who wished her a speedy recovery.

The team accompanied the kids to the Shenzhen Children’s Hospital and helped with every procedure, from form filling, checkup, to hospital admission.

During this treatment journey, seeing the worried face of Xiaoli’s father and his relief and happiness post the successful surgery has given the SY Capital team a deeper understanding of the value and significance of this charity program. Xiaoli’s father said he was very lucky to have learnt from their relatives and friends about the “Angel Beats” program initiated by SY Capital and Handpicked Love Foundation, which provides free heart surgeries for kids with CHDs such as Xiaoli, he was very grateful for this.

After Xiaoli returned home from her surgery, SY Capital received a voice message from her in the WeChat group. “Thank you! I am back in school now,” she said. This meant a lot for the team at SY Capital, who hopes to help more kids like Xiaoli to grow up in health and happiness.

Xiaoli’s father also sent a long and touching message in the WeChat group to express his gratitude for the “Angel Beats” program. “This program has been a huge pleasant surprise, and has given me hope for a healthy life ahead for my daughter”, he said. This is exactly what SY Capital has been working for, to bring hope to more people in need.

The story of Xiaoli ended here for now. Of course, it is not the end of the journey. More stories of SY Capital and kids with CHDs are continuing elsewhere....

Since the beginning of the collaboration with Handpicked Love Foundation in 2015, SY Capital has been advocating the spirit of personal participation and full commitment to charity work, focusing together on the care for children’s mental and physical health and well-rounded development, and offering medical aids and launching art-focused charity programs. SY Capital has sent teams to different cities to provide on-site support of CHD screening for the eligible, and has kept closely in touch with those that are in need for surgery after screening in order to offer timely help.

SY Capital has always made “sharing and growth” as part of its corporate culture, encouraging its employees to actively participate in charity work. As a company with strong commitment to corporate social responsibilities, in addition to promoting child development, SY Capital has long been an active participant in several public causes since its inception. Since its establishment, it has invested roughly RMB10 million in charity work, with more than 800 hours of charity work by its employees, including providing help to people in underprivileged areas, caring for special social groups, facilitating youth development, and supporting industry development and pandemic control in remote and impoverished regions. In 2021, SY Capital established its own charity program — “SY Light”, through which it expects to bring light and hope to more people in need. Going forward, SY Capital will expand charity endeavors to more areas, and bring love and hope to more places.

This is not the end of the journey, and our story will continue...
